2016 Recruit Prison Officer Campaign
The Irish Prison Service expects to appoint up to 120 Recruit Prison Officers per year over the next 3 years with the first recruits entering the Irish Prison Service in early 2017.
Candidates must have completed an initial online application on www.publicjobs.ie by latest 3pm on 28th July 2016. Candidates who apply successfully before the closing date for the competition will be required to complete the following progressive stages:
Stage 1 – Online Assessments
Stage 2 – Assessment Centre (supervised)

Prison Officer Recruitment course contents
Overview of Stages 1 – 4
Stage 1: Online Assessments
Upon successful completion of the initial online application all applicants will be invited to complete Stage 1. Full details of these tests will be emailed to all successful applicants. It is expected that the tests will include:
- Completion of an online assessment questionnaire
- Verbal Reasoning Test (verbal and instructional comprehension)
- Numerical Reasoning Test (numeracy and numerical procedures)
- Situational Judgement Questionnaire (job simulation)
Stage 2: Assessment Centre (supervised)
Candidates who progress onto Stage 2 will be required to sit further tests in a supervised setting. These could include:
- Paper-based assessment tests
- Presentation Exercise
- Work Sample Exercise
- Group Exercise
- Language Tests (oral and written)
Stage 3: Interview & other assessments
Upon successful completion of Stage 2 candidates will be invited to attend an interview and other assessments (as listed in stage 2). The interview is competency based and candidates will be assessed under the following 6 competencies:
- Directing Others
- Supporting Others
- Conscientiousness
- Resilience
- Adaptability
- Information Handling and Communication
Stage 4: Vetting; Medical Examination; Physical Competency Test; etc.
All candidates who have been successful at Stage 4 must complete an online pre-employment health questionnaire and undergo a pre-employment medical examination. This will be followed by a Physical Fitness Test which will be administered by the Irish Prison Service.
Minimum Age Eligibility
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age on or before 29th July 2016.
